We do Field Recording

Field recording is the term used for any recording produced outside of a recording studio.

Basically, field recordings can be either of two varieties : recording of natural sounds, originally employed as a documentary adjunct to research work in the field and foley work for film. With the availability of high-quality portable recording equipment, it has subsequently become an evocative art in itself. Both processed and natural phonographic recordings are available.

Field recording can also refer to on-site recordings of interviews, musicians, speech, live performance, press conference, etc.

Alex and Gaetan @ Hainan Rendez-Vous recording some Jet's motor sound

At Simply Sound, we work with many video and video games companies, providing field recording for different kind of projects : recording interviews for corporate movies, doing event coverage by catching the live mixing board output – for speech, music background, live performance, etc. (we generally bring our digital recorder and do our own mix on the mixing board for the recording), recording natural and human sounds for films and video games (like Jet motors sounds, car sounds, etc.).

Basically, we provide one sound engineer with his assistant and their own equipments to catch the better sound possible for your project.

We do Foley

Foley is the reproduction of everyday sounds for use in filmmaking. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. The best Foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the audience. It helps to create a sense of reality within a scene. Without these crucial background noises, movies feel unnaturally quiet and uncomfortable.

Foley artists look to recreate the realistic ambient sounds that the film portrays. The props and sets of a film do not react the same way acoustically as their real life counterparts. Foley sounds are used to enhance the auditory experience of the movie. Foley can also be used to cover up unwanted sounds captured on the set of a movie during filming that might take away from the scene at hand, such as overflying airplanes or passing traffic.

Footstep box - Simply Sound

At Simply Sound, we have many stuff to create Foley for your special projects, including a footstep box with different ground (sand, ground, wood, gravel, etc.).

Our job is to re-create the sound you want, for exemple, if you are looking for a snow crunching sound, we are able to create it with corn starch in a leather pouch, or if you are looking for a bird wings flapping, we can make it with a pairs of gloves !

We do music mastering

Mastering, a form of audio post-production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master); the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). The format of choice these days is digital masters although analog masters, such as audio tapes, are still being used by the manufacturing industry and a few engineers who have specialized themselves in analog mastering.

The source material, ideally at the original resolution, is processed using equalization, compression, limiting, noise reduction and other processes. More tasks, such as editing, pre-gapping, leveling, fading in and out, noise reduction and other signal restoration and enhancement processes can be applied as part of the mastering stage. This step prepares the music for either digital or analog, eg. vinyl, replication. The source material is put in the proper order, commonly referred to as assembly or (track) sequencing.

Simply Sound UA and Fireface

At Simply Sound, we use both digital and analog treatment for the music mastering. We use our Universal Audio Pre-Amp to color the sound with the tube, and make a first equalisation with the analog 2-band UA 610 EQ. Next step is to send the signal to the UA 1176 Limiter / Compresser. Like that, we can make a first dynamic reduction with an analog hardware, push the level of the mix louder, and color more the sound with the UA 1176 tube.

Then we work with digital plug-ins on our Digital Audio Workstation (Nuendo or Protoos). We use a series of Compressors, Limiters, Bands Compressors, 12 Bands EQs, etc. to make and have the perfect final sound we want, and the sound our client want !

We do Sound Design

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring and manipulating audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including film, video games, theatre, music recording, live music.

Sound Designer is one who practices the art of sound design and performance. Sound design most commonly involves the manipulation of previously composed audio, such as previously recorded music and sound effects. In some instances it may also involve the composition or manipulation of audio to create a desired sound effect.

At Simply Sound, we both create new sound effect and modify existing sound.

We record our own background sound and single sound for our database, and we also design our recorded sound, to create an original sound effect for your special projects !

We do stereo mixing for television and films

Audio mixing is a process during the post-production stage of a film or a television program by which a multitude of recorded sounds are combined into one or more channels. In the process, the source signals’ level, frequency content, dynamics and panoramic position are commonly being manipulated and effects such as reverb might be added.

The process takes place in a studio (or a theater) once the final cut is produced. Normally the engineer will mix 4 main elements:

  • Speech (dialogue, ADR, Voice-Overs, etc.)
  • Ambiance (or atmosphere)
  • Sound effects
  • Music

Simply Sound Mixing Stage

At Simply Sound, we work  on the sound post-production for many motion pictures and films companies in China, Europe and North America.

Our mixing stage have a big theater screen, some high quality stereo monitors, and all the necessary equipments for the sound post-production. We have already worked on many short-films, feature films, TVC (TV advertising), corporate movies, etc.

We do stereo music mixing

Audio mixing is the process by which a multitude of recorded sounds are combined into one or more channels, most commonly two-channel stereo. In this process, the source signals’ level, frequency content, dynamics and panoramic position are manipulated and effects such as reverb may be added. This practical, esthetic or otherwise creative treatment is done in order to produce a mix that is more appealing to listeners.

Audio mixing is done in studios as part of an album or single making. The mixing stage often follows the multitrack recording stage and the final mixes are normally submitted to a mastering engineer. The process is generally carried out by a mix engineer, also called mixing engineer, or mixer, though sometimes it is the musical producer, or even the artist who mixes the recorded material.

Prior to the emergence of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), the process of mixing used to be carried out on a device known as an audio mixer, sound board, desk, or mixing console. Nowadays, more and more engineers and independent artists are using a personal computer for the process (commonly referred to as mixing in-the-box).

Simply Sound Mackie Control

At Simply Sound, we use both analogue and digital treatment for the music mixing. We use Nuendo/Cubase or (and) Protools as Digital Audio Workstation, with many plugs-ins for the signals’ level, dynamic, frequency content, panoramic position, effects (reverb, delay, flanger, etc.) ; we also use analogue hardware for the dynamic (such as the Universal Audio 1176LN  vintage tube Limiting Amplifier) and for the frequency content (such as the Universal Audio Tube Preamplifier with 2 bands EQ).

In this way,we can add more color and harmonic distortion (analogue distortion) to our mix, with the precision and the clarity of  Digital Audio Workstation and digital high quality plugs-ins !

We compose music

A composer is a person who creates music, either by musical notation or oral tradition, for interpretation and performance, or through direct manipulation of sonic material through electronic media.

Simply Sound Music stage

At Simply Sound, we have 2 composers, able to create any kind of music for your special projects.

Alex is our “modern music” composer, with an amazing background in music scoring and producing in France for numerous top French artists (Pop, Urban and Electronic), with several gold and platinum records experiences.

We do 5.1 mixing

5.1 is a mixing technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with audio channels reproduced via additional, discrete speakers.

The three-dimensional sphere of human hearing can be virtually achieved with audio channels above and below the listener. To that end, the multichannel surround sound application encircles the audience with surround channels (left-surround, right-surround, back-surround), as opposed to “screen channels” (center, front left, and front right), 360° horizontal plane (2D).

Surround sound technology used in cinema and home theater systems, video game consoles, personal computers and other platforms.
